Polarimetric Radiometry – Coherent vs. Incoherent Detection
نویسنده
چکیده
There are two popular approaches to the design of a polarimetric radiometer: using either coherent or incoherent detection. Coherent detection implies that a direct cross-correlation is performed of the vertical and horizontal components of the incident electrical field. Incoherent detection derives the third and fourth Stokes parameters indirectly, by differencing the brightness temperatures detected at +/45 degree linear and left and right hand circular polarizations. In this paper, we consider the calibration accuracy of both types of radiometers. A relationship is developed between the true Stokes parameters and the measurements, as functions of non-ideal antenna characteristics. The sensitivity of calibration equations, which correct for these characteristics, to errors in knowledge of the polarization impurity is examined. It is found that, in most cases, the incoherent approach is considerably more tolerant of polarization impurity than is the coherent approach.

Interest in urban feature characterization has increased with the potential of polarimetric satellite SAR data from ALOS (already in orbit), Radarsat-2, TerraSAR, and Cosmo-SkyMed. The Touzi-Decomposition [1] has been introduced for both coherent and incoherent decomposition of target scattering using polarimetric SAR data. In contrast to the existing scattering decompositions [2, 3], the Touzi...

Classification of polarimetric SAR images has become a very important topic after the availability of Polarimetric SAR images through different sensors like SIR-C, ALOS-PALSAR etc. In this paper we studied effect of different decomposition techniques on the classification accuracy for polarimetric SAR data. We applied different target decomposition techniques (both coherent and incoherent) on A...

In this paper propagation of combined laser beam through atmosphere is investigated. Laser beam is combined via lens array arrangement. Turbulence is considered as an affecting factor of atmosphere and its effects on transverse coherence length (Fried parameter), peak intensity, propagation efficiency, and spot size of the laser beam is investigated. Coherent and incoherent combined beam are co...

The effects of including incoherent (bound-electron) and coherent (Rayleigh) scattering in exposure buildup factor calculations for point isotropic gamma ray sources, penetrating a two-layer water-lead shield have been investigated in the gamma ray energy (E?) range of 40 keV to 3 MeV. Incoherent scattering decreases the values of these factors in both layers up to E? ~ 200 keV and the effect i...

Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) is sensitive to the orientation and characters of object and polarimetry could yield several new descriptive radar target detection parameters and lead to the improvement of radar detection algorithms. Target decomposition theory has been used for information extraction in PolSAR, and it can also explore the phase message in PolSAR data. In this paper, a comparison of ...
